A BEAUTIFUL WEEKEND IN PAIGNTON
SUNSHINE, SEA AIR AND SISTERLY ESCAPES
— By Lisa Uttley
Ferries, Kayaks & Firelight on the Beach
Sometimes, the best trips are the ones where every day feels like a little adventure, yet the pace is relaxed enough to truly unwind. That’s exactly what our four days in South Devon gave us — a blend of coastal charm, hidden gems, delicious food, and plenty of sunshine.
Here’s how we spent our time exploring this beautiful part of England.
Our trip began with a scenic country lane drive leading us to Kingswear, where we hopped on the passenger ferry across to Dartmouth. From the water, the colourful hillside houses and gleaming yachts looked like something from a postcard.
We started the day slowly with breakfast and coffee overlooking the harbour, before swapping cups for paddles and heading out on a river and sea kayaking adventure. Gliding across the Dart and out to the coast was equal parts thrilling and peaceful — the perfect way to feel at one with the sea.
That evening brought one of those unforgettable simple joys: toasting marshmallows on the beach by the fire, sharing stories and making new friends as the sun dipped behind the horizon.
Later, we made our way to Teignmouth, where supper was a treat of tapas and wine at the Lobster Lounge — lively, delicious, and full of local flavour.
Friday: Gardens, Tapas & a Beach Sauna by the Sea
Friday blended relaxation with new experiences. We made our way to the passenger ferry and crossed over to Dartmuth. After a relaxed lunch in Dartmouth’s bandstand gardens,we headed to Blackpool Sands — one of South Devon’s most stunning beaches.
The afternoon was blissful: sea swimming in crystal-clear waters, sunbathing on the sand, and then warming up in a beach sauna with views straight out to the ocean. Between dips in the water and sips of cold drinks, it felt like the perfect mix of wellness and indulgence. A lazy, sun-soaked few hours that we could have happily stretched into forever.
Before winding through to Galmpton, where wood-fired pizza and wine at The Creek made for a cosy evening meal.Saturday: Sidmouth Airshow, Seaside Treats & Brixham Nights
Saturday was all about the seaside. A coastal drive east to Sidmouth set the tone with sweeping sea views. Once there, we joined the crowds for the Sidmouth Airshow, where the aerobatic displays wowed against the backdrop of blue skies.
We spent the afternoon browsing Sidmouth’s boutique shops, then tucked into classic fish and chips perched on the seawall, followed by a creamy ice cream treat as we strolled the streets.
Later, we returned west for an evening in Brixham — starting with sunset cocktails at Liberties, followed by a flavour-packed supper at The Olive. Our home for the night was the welcoming Cherwood Guesthouse, where we settled in for a peaceful, early night.
Sunday: Slow Moments & National Trust Treasures
Sunday gave us space to breathe. We allowed ourselves a lazy morning lie-in before wandering along the Paignton seafront, taking in the sounds of the ocean and a relaxed harbour stroll.
By afternoon, we were ready for something special: a visit to Coleton Fishacre, a National Trust property. This stunning 1920s country home, once owned by the D’Oyly Carte family, is set amidst lush gardens and coastal views that took our breath away. Exploring the house’s Art Deco interiors, wandering through the grounds, and soaking up the history felt like stepping back in time. We ended our visit perfectly with a traditional afternoon tea — the ideal way to wrap up our South Devon adventure.
