Golfers can enjoy
numerous courses around the area, from the challenging "Championship
Course" to the less demanding courses for the less experienced.
With 9 golf courses within a 30 minute drive of Torbay - from
the relatively new "Championship Course" at Dartmouth to
the South Devon's only true "Links Course" at Dawlish Warren,
visitors looking for a game of golf are truly spoilt for choice!
TORQUAY - A fairly tight parkland
course, two cliff top holes and views out to sea.
CHURSTON - Between Paignton and
Brixham, cliff top type golf meandering around the headland -
wonderful views across the bay to Torquay playing the inward nine.
Both Torquay and
Churston are traditional style golf clubs requiring players to
have official handicaps. Charges between £25 and £35
per day.
DAINTON PARK - A relatively
new course only a stones throw away from the Bay at Ipplepen.
Attractive parkland course, plus a covered driving range, features
water hazards on six holes and reputably the the toughest opening
two holes in Devon! Accessible to visitors, handicap certificates
not essential, green fees £16 to £18 per round. Popularity
makes it advisable to pre-book start times by phone.
HELE PARK - A short 9-hole
course. Pleasant to play, also has a covered driving range.
STOVER - This golf club
situated close to Newton Abbot is not a long course, but has an
abundance of trees, heather and gorse which place a premium on
accuracy. Handicap Certificates required. Costs around £25
per day.
TEIGNMOUTH - Some 900
feet above sea level, designed by MacKenzie, who also designed
Augusta in Atlanta. The course has few trees and offers a "heathland"
layout with plenty of heather and gorse. Spectacular views across
the estuary and Lyme Bay can be seen on clear days. Handicap Certificates
required. Costs around £25 per day.
THE
WARREN - This golf course near Dawlish,
offers the only true "links" golf in South Devon. Occupying
a narrow peninsular extending into the estuary of the River Exe,
The Warren has numerous natural bunkers and plenty of gorse
to catch the wayward hitter. There is also a wild bird sanctuary
close by. Handicap Certificates required. Costs around £25
per day.
TEIGN VALLEY - This is
a fairly new golf course to the north of the region. There is
a mixture of terrain, flat tight fairways down near the riverside
and steep and rugged fairways on the slopes of the surrounding
hills. One hole boasts a mention in the "Guinness Book of Records"
for a 'hole in one' on a hole which is a dog-leg in excess of
500 yards!!
DARTMOUTH GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB - All Cherwood Hotel guests receive privileged discounts

Golf and Country Club. This is South Devon's premier golf
and leisure complex and they offer unlimited golf. There are two
courses a 9-hole course and the 18-hole championship course. On
weekdays, visitors to the 18 hole course would normally pay £27
and at weekends it would be £30. Junior charges are £10
in the week and £15 at the weekend. LESS the 25% privileged
guest status of The Cherwood! On the 9 hole course, the
prices are £12 for 9 holes or £15 for 18 holes, in
both cases LESS the 25% privileged guest status of The Cherwood!

This is a superb Leisure Club with an indoor
swimming pool, sauna, jacuzzi, steam room and solarium.
A full range of specialist health and beauty treatments
are provided by the club's beauticians and therapists, whilst
for the more energetic, there is a fully equipped gymnasium
with the latest exercise equipment.
An all day leisure ticket will cost you £10,
less the 25% discount. The Leisure Club offer a "dip and
dine" facility for £9.95, again less the 25% privileged
guest status .

The superb 18 hole, 7,200 yard par 72 course
which has recently hosted the Western region PGA Match Play
Championship, has been designed to challenge the most proficient
of golfers. The strategic positions of the trees guarantees
the course provides an exacting and enjoyable challenge
for golfers of all abilities. Handicap Certificates are
not essential.

The 9 hole, 2,600 yard par 33 course offers
a more relaxing challenge, but nevertheless, the holes have
been built to the same exacting technical standards as the
championship course.

With many private charter boats in the harbours at Paignton,
Torquay and Brixham, trips can be arranged for the fishing enthusiast.
Simple 2½ to 3 hours trips - mackerel fishing in the summer
months - provides fun for all ages. Economical, around £5
to £6 for adults. If you have not tried this before, great
fun can be had jiggling the feathered hooks through the water.
Large shoals can often see anglers hauling in 6 to 8 fish at a
time. Definitely a fun trip, no worms to handle for the squeamish.
All tackle supplied and instruction given if this is your first
experience.
WRECK FISHING
For
the more dedicated, 6, 8 or 12 hour trips can be arranged, searching
deeper waters. Sonar equipped vessels with fish finding sounders
can take you on a journey in search of larger prey - tackle and
bait supplied. Subject to weather conditions. Prices per angler
start from around £12 per person dependant on length of
trip. Groups and parties catered for. Individuals may be allowed
to join a small group charter.
This area has a number of sub-aqua clubs and diving is popular
around parts of Torbay. The clear waters provide a haven for many
under water sea life species. Some of the underwater pictures
taken could give the impression that they had come from some continental
shore. If you have ever wished to learn sub-aqua here is an opportunity
- 5 day courses leading to certification from £195. Consecutive
weekend courses on Saturday and Sunday from £195. Other
certifications can be arranged, please phone for details.
Families love Paignton - flat level walks, in stark contrast
to Torquay which is built on a cliff, bring visitors right to
the sea shore. long sandy beaches, colourful atmosphere, paddler-friendly
waters and first class attractions are the essential ingredients
for a magical family holiday. In the summer months, life revolves
around the sea front which comes alive to the sound of laughter
and holiday fun.
But
there is also another side to this distinctive seaside town which
can be found in the elegance of Oldway Mansion, the green coast
line of Elberry Cove and the architecture of Palace Avenue. At
night, Paignton seafront comes alive with illuminations and is
perfect for an evening stroll. There is a variety of entertainment
and excellent food and drink outlets.

A magnificent legacy of one of Paignton's oldest
families - "The Singers" of sewing machine fame. The grand
marble staircase and the gallery modelled on the Hall
of Mirrors in the Palace of Versailles . The American
Statue of Liberty is said to have been modelled by
the wife of Isaac Singer and created by a French sculptor!

fame has brought about a new face lift for Paignton Zoo.
Now one of the largest in the country, the 'Big Cat Forest',
the 'Bird Aviary' and the 'Wetland Experience' offer state
of the art enclosures and are designed with the animals
and visitors in mind. This is a must see!!

with attractions. It has a large children's area and is
an ideal place to take in views of Paignton and the nearby
coastline.

Paignton
to Dartmouth, a magical run back through the ages of time
on a seven mile journey through spectacular scenery of Devon

Based on the beach at Goodrington and free to
enter, the centre offers a Journey of Discovery into
the under water world of the sea shore. Interactive exhibits,
a walk through a rock pool and a programme of regular rockpool
rambles. Great for children!

Paignton Green is the venue for outdoor events
and entertainment, with carnivals, funfairs, fireworks,
shows, music and festivals all year round, including the
Annual Children's Festival and Radio One Show.
It is also the setting for countless games of cricket and
football, frisbee and kite flying. Suitable for all ages!

The " Jewel
in the Crown" of Paignton is located at the southern end
of Paignton Green and sands. It is a local community area,
with cafes, restaurants, shops, post office and of course
the local pub. The quaint harbour is a peaceful place to
sit and relax. Have a chat and take in the boating activities.
See the fishing boats landing or if you fancy being a little
more adventurous, try some D.I.Y. boating - hire your own
boat. Pick up a ferry trip across the bay or a cruise to
the river Dart. The Harbour is an "Olde World" part of Paignton
often missed - suitable for all ages.
